#12 Azusa Pacific 9, Sonoma State 0
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Sonoma State men's tennis team opened up their weekend in the Valley of the Sun on Friday morning with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of No. 12 Azusa Pacific. The Seawolves battled, but had no answers for the Cougars, the second-highest ranked west region team in the ITA polls.
The closest contest in doubles came at the No. 3 spot, where
Seth Hein and
Jimmy Manning were defeated 8-4. Azusa Pacific rolled to 8-1 and 8-2 victories at the top two spots.
In singles play,
Robert Henry made things interesting with a 7-6 opening set victory before he was forced to retire in the second set. His effort at No. 4 would be as close as Sonoma would get. Both
Philip Holbrook (No. 2) and
Logan Liddell (No. 5) took five games off their opponents.
Standing in against the seventh-ranked singles individual in the country, Jan Meyer, Sonoma's
Matt Roberts did admirably, taking two games in the first set before succumbing 6-2, 6-0.
The Seawolves are back in action in action later this afternoon when they take on Point Loma Nazarene.
