LA JOLLA, Calif. --  Despite falling behind after doubles, the Sonoma State men's tennis team clawed their way to a 5-4 win over Western New Mexico on Friday afternoon in La Jolla.  With the match tied 4-4, Sonoma got the game-winner from Daniel Holz at No. 3 singles to edge the Mustangs and pick up their second win of the season.  Matt Roberts and Philip Holbrook were both double winners for the 48th-ranked Seawolves

The Mustangs picked up two points in doubles with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.  Sonoma's point came from Roberts and Holbrook, who prevailed 8-6 at the top spot.

After WNMU got the first point in singles, extending their lead to 3-1, the Seawolves started chipping away.  Winning results from Roberts at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0) and Holbrook at No. 2 (6-3, 6-0) evened the score.  The teams traded the next two points to come in, with Sonoma's Vincent Paganetti winning at No. 6 and Robert Henry falling at No. 4, leaving the last match on the court to decide the victor.

In a tightly contested matchup, Holz emerged on top, defeating Sascha Brechtel 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-2. 

Friday's win avenged a 6-3 loss earlier in the season to the Mustangs and was the Seawolves' first victory against them since 2010, though it always seems to be tight.  In fact, three of the last five matches have been decided by 5-4 scores.  Sonoma State leads the all-time series, 9-5.

Sonoma State (2-6) will continue their weekend in Southern California with a match against Bethany College on Saturday.
