LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Despite two wins by
Philip Holbrook, the Sonoma State men's tennis team ended up on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision at the hands of Bethany College (KS) on Saturday in La Jolla. The Swedes, ranked 15th as a team in the NAIA rankings, stay unbeaten on the year at 8-0. The Seawolves, ranked 48th in NCAA Division II, fall to 2-7 with one more match to go on their Southern California road trip.
The Seawolves picked up one point in doubles action as Holbrook and
Matt Roberts earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory at the top spot. Their win came against the 19th-ranked doubles tandem in the national NAIA rankings. The Swedes won the other matches by identical 8-3 scores.
Holbrook's win at No. 2 singles came by a 6-1, 6-4 margin over 27th-ranked Laurentsi Arakhamiya.
Vincent Paganetti also got a win, in marathon fashion, 6-4, 2-6 (12-10), at No. 6.
The Seawolves will take on 12th-ranked UC San Diego on Sunday in La Jolla.
