SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Philip Holbrook cruised to a straight-set victory on Friday, scoring the match-clinching point for the Sonoma State men's tennis team, which knocked off Hawaii-Hilo, 5-2, in the consolation bracket semifinal at the Pacific West Conference Championships in Surprise, Ariz.  The No. 5 seed Seawolves (11-12) will play for fifth place in the PacWest Tournament on Saturday at 8:30 am against 25th-ranked Point Loma.  Hawaii-Hilo, the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament, ends its season with a 1-17 record.

The pairing of Logan Liddell and Robert Henry got Sonoma State off on the right foot Friday, sprinting past their opponents at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.  Hawaii-Hilo tied the match at 1-1 with an identical 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but Jimmy Manning and Seth Hein battled to give the Seawolves a 2-1 edge in the match with a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 2.

In singles play, Logan Liddell and Robert Henry got the Seawolves within one point of the overall victory with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-5 wins, respectively, but the Vulcans' Tom Greer-Smith snuck past SSU's Matt Roberts at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-3) to cut the Sonoma State lead to 4-2.  However, Holbrook was well on his way to beating his opponent at No. 2 in straight sets, clinching the match win for the Seawolves and extending their season another day.
