Women's Tennis Eliminated From USTA/ITA Fall Regionals

LOS ANGELES -- Kaitlyn Haithcock and Jordyn Kearney suffered singles losses in straight sets in the Round of 16 and the duo of Karlee Budge and Mariann Bukich also came away with a loss in the Round of 16 in doubles play, effectively ending the weekend for the Sonoma State women's tennis team at the 2014 USTA/ITA West Regional Championships, hosted by Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles.

Haithcock was defeated by second-seeded Karen Liu of BYU-Hawaii (2-6, 0-6) while Kearney lost to No. 6-seed Natalie Johnson of Azusa Pacific (1-6, 4-6), both being eliminated in the process.  On the doubles side, Budge and Bukich has a tough draw, matching up with the No. 1-seed pairing of Dallas Zhang and Karen Liu of BYU-Hawaii, and it was Zhang and Liu to dispatch Budge and Bukich (8-2) to eliminate the Seawolves from play.

Sonoma State will take next weekend off before hosting its own Sonoma State Invitational on Oct. 11-12 at the SSU Tennis Courts.

Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season At ITA Regionals In LA

LOS ANGELES --
Kaitlyn Haithcock and Jordyn Kearney picked up a couple of singles victories on Thursday to earn spots in the Round of 16 and the pairing of Karlee Budge and Mariann Bukich recorded an opening round win in doubles play to also advance to the Round of 16 at the 2014 USTA/ITA West Regional Championships, hosted by Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles.

Haithcock earned a first round win in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) over Michelle Dandik of Academy of Art, then followed with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Chloe Vicari of Dominican two hours later to secure herself a spot in the Round of 16 on Friday at 9:00 am against second-seeded Karen Liu of BYU-Hawaii.  Kearney also grabbed a pair of wins in straight sets, defeating UC San Diego's Nava Nowamooz (6-1, 7-5) and Point Loma's Hilary Rampage (6-3, 6-2) to setup a Round of 16 match against Natalie Johnson of Azusa Pacific on Friday at 9:00 am.

Though Budge (1-6, 1-6) and Bukich (2-6, 1-6) both lost in the opening round in singles play, the two paired up in doubles play and knocked off Amaru Hernandez and Taylor Barajas of Holy Names (8-6) and will battle in the Round of 16 against top-seeded Dallas Zhang and Karen Liu of BYU-Hawaii at 4:00 pm on Friday.  Haithcock and Kearney also played doubles on Thursday, but lost (8-6) to Annika Schneider and Michelle Dandik of Academy of Art.

The Rounds of 16 and Rounds of 8 are scheduled to be played on Friday, followed by the semifinals and finals on Saturday.

The three-day tournament features the top NCAA Division II men's and women's tennis players in the West Region. All women's matches will be played on the Cal State L.A. Tennis Courts in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex, while the men's draw began at Azusa Pacific on Thursday and will conclude at Cal State L.A. on Friday and Saturday.
 
Cal State L.A. is hosting the event for a fifth straight year.
 
The singles and doubles champions will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, which will be held on Oct. 9-12 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina. The national championship event will include all eight regional champions from the NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
 
The USTA/ITA National Small College Championship is the only national championship event for singles and doubles at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels.
 
As in the past, the singles and doubles champions at each level will then compete to become the overall "Super Bowl" champions. The "Super Bowl" champions will earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. on Nov. 6-9.
 
In all, 8,000 varsity tennis players from more than 600 schools will be competing in USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
