Holbrook Wins Two In PacWest Opener Against #17 BYU-Hawaii

SURPRISE, Ariz. --  Despite a pair of wins at the top of the table from Philip Holbrook, the Sonoma State men's tennis team dropped their Pacific West Conference Championship opener to BYU-Hawaii on Thursday, 5-2.  Seeded sixth in the tournament, the Seawolves will continue play on Friday morning against No. 7 Hawaii-Hilo.

The Seawolves got out to a promising start as Holbrook and Noah Lee earned an 8-6 win over the nation's 20th-ranked doubles team of Martin Chojnacki and Yevhen Zakharov.  The matches at No. 2 and No. 3 were close as well, with BYUH prevailing by scores of 8-5 and 8-3.

Holbrook's impressive day continued with a 6-0, 6-0 performance againt Chojnacki at No. 1 singles.  Chojnacki entered the match ranked 39th in the nation.

Though close matches were contested up and down the line, narrow wins at No. 3 against Blaine Mengert (6-3, 7-6 [7-5]) and at No. 6 against Vincent Paganetti (6-2, 7-5) allowed the Seasiders to clinch the match.

Friday's match against the Vulcans is set for a 9:00 am start.
