CHICO, Calif. – Kim Savio went 11 for 13 from the floor and scored a game high of 23 points to boost the Seawolves (3-0) to an 82-58 victory over Dixie State (0-3) Friday night in Acker Gym.
This is the third straight game the Seawolves have scored over 80 points. The last time Sonoma State accomplished this feat was in the 1991 season. On Nov. 29 against Dominican University when they won 90-26, the following night they topped UC Santa Cruz 97-32, and finally on Dec. 13 defeated Cal State LA 87-64.
Also contributing to the Seawolf win tonight, was Kylie Kiech with 11 points and a team high of six assists. Jessica Mitz chipped in 10 points and four assists. Madison Burroughs had the game high of four steals in addition to adding 8 points and pulling down 4 rebounds.
The team as a whole had 23 defensive rebounds compared to their 8 offensive boards. They capitalized on turnovers, scoring 36 points. The Seawolves dominated their opponent from within the paint, outscoring the Trailblazers 44-22. The Seawolves only outscored their opponent by 5 in the second half, but it was outscoring them by 19 in the first that gave Sonoma the comfortable lead and control of the game.
Sonoma State was quick out the gate. By 4:57 in the first quarter they went on a seven point run and were up 14-8. By 4:05 they were ahead by 9 and finished out the quarter up by 15.
In the second, Molly Donovan scored in the paint to open the second and increased the Seawolves' lead to 17. By 5:23 left in the first half, Sonoma State had built a 23-point lead. They stayed ahead of Dixie State and went into the half up 19 points.
The Trailblazers pushed back at the end of the third quarter with a nine point run going from 38 to 46.
The fourth quarter began Sonoma 62 to Dixie 46. The Seawolves made two big runs in the fourth quarter going from 66 to 77 and then from 78 to 82. Their opponent only scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and the game ended in favor of Sonoma State.
The Seawolves will play Western Oregon at 5:30pm tomorrow November 19 in Acker Gym for the Carl's Jr. Coslet Classic.
