Gill's Career Night Fuels Seawolves to Win Over Pomona

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The Seawolves toppled the Broncos 74-62 Friday night thanks in part to hot shooting from Carly Gill. This win over Cal Poly Pomona is the first in 14 match-ups between the teams and snaps a Sonoma losing streak established in 2009. Sonoma State's record improves to 3-2 in the CCAA and 7-3 overall. Cal Poly Pomona falls to 4-2 in conference and 6-6 overall.

The junior point guard, Gill, earned 27 points at 71 percent, and is now the single game scoring record holder since 2007-08.  On the game, Gill was 1-1 from the field, 5-5 beyond the arch, and 10-14 at the line, and in the first half scored 16 points shooting 100 percent. Kim Savio had 12 points and was one rebound away from a double-double. Kylie Kiech and Jessica Mitz both had 10 points and 5 assists, and Kiech also pulled down six boards.

The Seawolves shot 44 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arch, totaled 17 assists and 35 rebounds, and six different Seawolves combined for six steals.

The first quarter was a struggle for the Seawolves. They scored a mere eight points against their opponent's 17.

The second quarter was almost the exact opposite story. Sonoma State scored 18 points to Cal Poly Pomona's eight. The Seawolves also pulled down 13 rebounds and Gill knocked down four treys. The Broncos were only able to gain six boards that quarter and the teams entered the half at 26-25 in favor of Sonoma.

Sonoma asserted their lead in the third quarter and outscored Pomona 23-16.  In the first three minutes, they increased the gap from one to 10. Pomona scored for the second time in the quarter, and Jessica Mitz responded with a three-pointer to increase Sonoma's lead to 11.

The fourth quarter was a matter of the Seawolves holding onto their lead. The largest one of 15 points, came at 6:54 left in the game. The field goal that secured it was by Kiech and was also the last point from the field they would score of the game.

Mitz scored her second trey on the night within the first minute of the quarter, and then made two free throws just past the seven-minute mark. After Kiech's jumper, the rest of Sonoma's points came from the charity stripe where they were 20-26. The closest the Broncos would get to the Seawolves was 7.

The Seawolves will take on Cal State East Bay on December 31 at 5:30pm. Santa Rosa Junior College will host while the Wolves' Den undergoes construction.
