2016 PacWest Men's Tennis Championship Central
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Senior
Daniel Holz earned his first singles victory of the season in his final collegiate match, but the Sonoma State men's tennis team saw its 2016 season come to an end with a 5-3 loss to No. 32 Holy Names on Friday in the consolation semifinals of the PacWest Men's Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz. The Seawolves finished with a 1-20 record.
In doubles play, Holz and teammate
Kevin To notched their fifth doubles win as partners this season, recording a convincing 8-1 win at No. 3 to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead in the match. After a loss at No. 2, SSU had a shot at taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but
Blaine Mengert and
Logan Liddell fell on the short end of a nailbiting 9-7 score and Sonoma would trail 2-1 heading into singles.
Riding the momentum of his big win in doubles, Holz cruised to first win in 23 matches, dating back to last season, a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 over the Hawks' Hugo Colpart, who Holz had lost to already twice this season. The Seawolves then took the match lead at 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 by
Sullivan Roche, but Holy Names got straight set wins at No. 3, 5 and 2 to clinch the match.
Friday's match was also the final one for
Logan Liddell, who went 3-22 during his senior campaign.
