BOX SCORE Los Angeles, Calif. - For the second time this season, the Sonoma State Seawolves traveled to southern California and took a weekend series, as they pulled away late in Sunday morning's series finale against Cal State Los Angeles for an 8-3 victory.
Down 3-2 going into the seventh, the Seawolves went ahead for good thanks to
Matthew Richards, who continued a big weekend with a two-out, two-run homer to start a big three-inning run. In the eighth,
Daniel Caresio singled home
Brett Sesma to make it 5-3.
The ninth inning was the big finish for the Seawolves. Richards led off the inning by reaching on an error and
Adam Manzer followed with a single. After a
Spencer Neve walk loaded the bases, Golden Eagle reliever Holden Berger commited a balk to score Richards. After a pitching change,
Tyler Glenn singled to right to plate Manzer and make it 7-3. The final run came across thanks to a wild pitch, as Neve scored to put the game away for the Seawolves.
Five players had multi-hit games for the Seawolves, with
Ryan O'Malley going 3-for-5 to lead the way. He was also hit by a pitch. Caresio, Richards, Neve and Glenn each had two hits apiece, with Richards and Glenn each driving in two runs.
Richards' two hits were a double and a homer, and he scored all four times he reached base in the game. In the series, he had five hits, four RBIs and four runs scored. O'Malley's series was great as well, as he had six hits, including a homer and a double of his own. His 1.239 OPS is tops amongst eligible CCAA hitters this season.
The late run made a winner out of
Mitch Coombs, who pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win of the season. Starter
Matt Hammonds pitched well in his 4 1/3 innings, allow three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Cody Bennett pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to pick up his second save.
UP NEXT: The busy month of April for the Seawolves continues as the Seawolves play a makeup game on Tuesday, April 5 against San Francisco State at Seawolf Diamond. It will be a non-conference affair, with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
