SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --
Blaine Mengert came from behind to earn a hard-fought win at No. 2 singles, but that would be the only point earned by the Sonoma State men's tennis team on Sunday as UC Santa Cruz bested the Seawolves 8-1.
The seven-time NCAA Division III National Champion Banana Slugs improved to 5-6 with the win while Sonoma dropped to 1-18.
After dropping the first set 6-2, Mengert came back to win 6-2 in the second and then 10-7 in a third set tiebreaker. Â It was the team-high seventh win of the season for Mengert.
Sullivan Roche nearly pulled out a win at No. 4, but after winning 6-4 in the first, he was topped 6-2 and 10-7.
The doubles tandem of
Daniel Holz and
Kevin To was edged 9-8 (2) at the No. 3 spot. Â That amounted to the best chance Sonoma had at earning a point in doubles play.
The loss closes out the regular season for the Seawolves, who will now look forward to the Pacific West Conference Championships, starting April 14th in Surprise, Arizona.
