Curtin Twins To Continue Soccer Careers In Switzerland

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's soccer team is proud to announce that twin sisters Cara and Lauren Curtin have each signed a professional contract to play with Football Femminile Lugano 1976 of Lega Nazionale A, the top level of soccer in Switzerland.

The sisters from Santa Rosa both earned All-America status and played together at SSU during the 2013 season.  While they arrived on campus together in 2012, Lauren missed the season due to an injury, pushing her collegiate career into 2014.

Said SSU Head Coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn, "It is hard for me to express the joy I feel in what Cara and Lauren have been able to accomplish.  My journey with them started when I was still coaching at SRJC, so to witness their careers here at SSU result in something as spectacular as two professional careers is beyond my wildest dreams.  They epitomize those old cliches that hard work, self-motivation, and inner belief truly can result in dreams coming true.  I do believe that the coaches and teammates we surrounded them with while here at SSU helped them develop the qualities they would need to succeed, which of course, is a great testament to the legacy of this program."

Cara led the team in scoring as a junior and senior, putting 24 balls in the net to earn the #10 spot on the all-time list, despite playing just two years.  The Seawolves were 29-8-5 during her career, reaching the NCAA Tournament twice.  She was a two-time First Team All-West Region pick and earned NSCAA and Daktronics All-America honors as a junior in 2012.

Like her sister, Lauren led the team in scoring as a senior, scoring 12 goals.  She also was tops on the team in assists in 2013 (with 9) when she was named an All-American, by both the NSCAA and Daktronics.  She is the sixth player in school history to lead her team in points in back-to-back years, compiling 51 between 2013 and 2014.

Football Femminile Lugano 1976 plays in a 14,500-seat stadium in the town of Lugano, Switzerland.  Lugano, which is near the Italian border, is a popular tourist town and is the largest Italian-speaking city outside of the Italy.
