DAVIS, Calif. -- The 24th-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team took a break from double days on Friday afternoon to open their pre-season with an exhibition game at UC Davis. Despite a 5th minute goal from freshman Sarah Lindborg, the Seawolves were done in by a pair of second half Aggie strikes in a 2-1 loss.
While the game was only an exhibition for the Seawolves, it was the regular season opener for the Aggies. And after Lindborg was able to capitalize on an Aggie miscue deep in their half, it looked like Sonoma might be able to play the role of spoiler.
The Seawolves held on to their 1-0 lead through the first half before two early second half goals in the span of four minutes gave Davis the edge. The first came on a 25 yard shot from Celina Minissian, while Rachel Ahr converted a penalty for the game-winner.
Said head coach
Emiria Salzmann Dunn, "It was a game of two halves. We did exceptionally well in the first. We were organized and put forth a determined effort. With it being only our fifth day of double days, we lost our legs in the second half and Davis was able to come back."
Sonoma returns to action on Sunday when they take on the Academy of Art in a scrimmage. The game is scheduled for a noon kickoff at the Beach Chalet facility in San Francisco.
