Sonoma Falls To Toros; Seda Eclipses Assists Milestone

CARSON, Calif. -- Courtney Seda handed out 57 assists Friday night, pushing her over the 3,000 mark for her career, but the Sonoma State volleyball team fell victim to another five-set loss, this time to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Torodome in Carson.  The Seawolves, who drop to 1-4 in five-set matches this season, fall to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA.  The Toros improved to 11-10, 7-5 CCAA.  Final scores for the match were 25-23, 15-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13.

The Seawolves did a lot of things right in the first including hitting .333, and holding their opponents to a .250 average.  Leading the charge offensively was sophomore outside hitter Caiti Wiesner who had seven of her twenty on the match.  Unfortunately hitting stats alone weren't good to hold off the Toros as multiple blocking errors on the Seawolves ended up being a major deciding factor in this set.

In the second set the Seawolves regrouped in making up for the first set loss.  The Seawolves had one of their best hitting sets of the season in hitting .419 for the set.  The team accumulated fifteen kill swings while only having two errors.  More importantly serve receive, and setting decision making was a big part of the team having a side-out percentage of 80%.  Offensively it was Junior Middle hitter Morgan Annala who led the way with six kills on eight attempts.   The Seawolves only had one tie score very early in the set, and the rest was a win that was going away, and a ten point victory.

After the break the Seawolves picked up right where they ended the second set.  After a brief 8-8 tie a 17-7 run ensued. Much of the run was behind the very tough serving of Seda who had a nine point serving run.   Offensively again the Seawolves put up monster numbers and hit .444 for the set.

When everything is going your way, sometimes it is hard to keep the focus.  Unfortunately when on the road losing focus is not something you can do.  Led by sophomore outside hitter Tati Yandall's six kills on eleven attempts who took matters into their own hands and showed a never give up attitude.  The Seawolves struggled in keeping the ball in play and made a match high eight hitting errors, and were held to a .094 hitting percentage.

Fifth sets on the road are always a challenge and it was the Seawolves who found themselves down early, and down 8-5 at the switch.  Sonoma State did not give up and were only down one late at 12-13.  Unfortunately five hitting errors for SSU, and only two for the home team was the downfall in this set for the visitors.

Seda, who now has 3,024 career assists, joins former Seawolves Lindsay Brown (2006-09) and Hayley Ross (2010-13) as the only SSU volleyball players with 3,000 or more assists; Brown holds the all-time record with 3,619, followed by Ross with 3,133.

Sonoma State jumps right back in action against Cal State L.A.   Cal State L.A. is coming off of a four set win versus San Francisco State on Friday night is on a three game winning streak of their own.  Currently Cal State LA is 11-9 on the season and in a tie for fourth place in the CCAA South Division.  Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
