Softball Sweeps Stanislaus In Home Opener With 5-4 Wins

ROHNERT PARK -- Jenny Collazo went 4 for 8 with a double, triple, two walks and two RBI in two games, and after a quick 5-4 win in game one, Sarah Langley lifted a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th inning for the Sonoma State softball team's second 5-4 victory of the day over visiting Stanislaus State Thursday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field.

The Seawolves improve to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the CCAA.  The Warriors fell to 8-4 and 4-2 in conference action.  The two teams will be back in action Friday to wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.

In the opener, Stanislaus State struck first for a run in its first at bat before Collazo delivered an RBI triple scoring Karly Macadangdang, followed by an RBI groundout by Jordann White for the 2-1 lead after one frame.

Alison Strycula built the lead up to two runs in the bottom of the second when she singled home Jenn Amaral.  With a 3-1 advantage in the fourth, Amaral scored again, but this time on a wild pitch by Warrior starter Kylie Ragsdale to make it 4-1 Seawolves.  Strycula came up again in the sixth and bunted home a run for the 5-1 lead, a run that proved to be crucial later.

Stanislaus rallied in its final at bat in the seventh to score three runs, cutting its deficit to just one run with two runners on and just one out in the inning.  However, SSU starter Brigid Ruiz dug deep to get the final two outs and capture the nailbiting victory.

Strycula was a perfect 3 for 3 in game one with two RBI and a stolen base.  In the circle, Ruiz allowed eight hits, four runs (three earned) while striking out four, improving to 2-2 as the pitcher of record this season.

In the nightcap, Stanislaus State again found the scoreboard first, plating two in the second inning on an error and a bunt single, both with the bases loaded.  The Seawolves got the runs back in their next at bat, thanks to a sacrifice fly to score White before Langley scored on a wild pitch by Warrior hurler Anyssa Garvin.

A run came home to score for the visitors in the fifth on another defensive error by the Seawolves, who would end up with eight errors in the doubleheader combined.  A half-inning later, Collazo singled home Strycula to tie the game again, this time at 3-3, before Langley put SSU on top with an RBI single to bring home Collazo, 4-3 Sonoma.

The Warriors didn't go down without a fight, leading off the seventh inning with a single, double, walk and another single, the latter pulled Stanislaus even with Sonoma at 4-4 with the momentum in their favor; the Warriors had the bases loaded with no outs still.  That's when SSU pitcher Brielle Vidmar worked herself out of the jam, inducing an unassisted double play with a nice diving play by Macadangdang to make the catch on the line and snap her glove to first base before the runner made it back, followed by a fly out to end the inning.

The game eventually went to extra innings and both teams had chances to break the 4-4 deadlock, including a 10th-inning bases-loaded one-out situation for Sonoma State that saw Stanislaus State escape to force more innings.

Finally, in the 12th and the teams facing darkness, Collazo doubled to lead off the inning, got to third on a fielder's choice, then scampered home on Langley's fly out to right field for the walkoff 5-4 win.

VIdmar got the win after 196 pitches, improving to 2-1 on the year.  She allowed 11 hits, four runs (one earned) and three walks, striking out four.
