PUEBLO, Colo -- Sullivan Roche won for the second time in three matches, defeating his opponent at No. 4 singles in straight sets, and four other Sonoma State men's tennis players forced 10-point tiebreakers in their singles matches, but no one else could notch the win in Friday's 8-1 loss to Colorado Mesa in Pueblo, Colo. The Seawolves fell to 1-9 this season while the Mavericks improved to 8-10.
After falling behind 3-0 through doubles action, Sonoma battled tough to force the tiebreakers in four of the six singles matches. First,
Alec Wong won his first set 6-2, but eventually lost 1-6 and 5-10 at No. 2.
Max Nudell lost his first set (2-6), but rallied for a 6-4 win in set two before falling 9-11 at No. 1.
Mitchel Heckmann snatched a 7-5 win in his first set at No. 3, but his opponent came back for 6-3 and 10-6 wins to clinch the match for Colorado Mesa, despite the win by Roche at No. 4.
Blaine Mengert forced the other tiebreaker at No. 5, he lost his first set 5-7, won the next 6-2, but lost 7-10 in the tiebreaker to end the match.
Sonoma State continues its annual Colorado trip Saturday with a match against Colorado College at 4:00 pm PDT.
