SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Blaine Mengert and
Sullivan Roche earned a convincing 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, but it would be the only point the Sonoma State men's tennis team could muster in a 5-1 loss to No. 23 Concordia-Irvine in the consolation semifinal on Friday at the PacWest Men's Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
The Seawolves (3-13) will now play for seventh place in the conference when they take on Point Loma Saturday at 9:00 am.
When the fifth point was scored by Concordia-Irvine (13-8), both
Mitchel Heckmann and Mengert were on their way to a singles victory, as Heckmann led 6-4, 4-2 and Mengert was one game from notching his win as he led 6-1, 6-6 (5-1) in the second-set tiebreaker. However, CUI's Sten Boersma knocked off
Alec Wong at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Eagles.
