Seawolves Split At Route 92 Showdown In Belmont Friday

Biola 3, Sonoma State 2

BELMONT, Calif. --
On an extremely hot day in the Walter Gleason Gym located on the campus of Notre Dame De Namur, it was the Seawolves who fell to the Eagles of Biola University. Playing in their first match as a Division II member, Biola University held on for a five set win by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12. Sonoma State runs their record to (1-1)while the Eagles start the season with a (1-0) record.

The Seawolves were led by a trio of players offensively with senior outside hitter Calan Seitz having 14 kills, junior middle hitter Morgan Annala 14 kills, and senior middle hitter Kelsey McIntire with 13 of her own.

Unfortunately for the Seawolves, it was the Christina DenBoer show on the outside for the Eagles who led her team with 21 kills on 58 attempts. DenBoer was not only effective in the front row, but was equally as dominant hitting out of the back row.

Sonoma State struggled from the service line this afternoon with 10 service errors while only acquiring four aces. Statistically Biola was better in the hitting, digging, and blocking categories but the match was very well played on both sides.

Senior setter Courtney Seda:  "We played very hard the entire game, and had great energy. We are only going to get better from here. This was a good team to play early in the season to see where we are as a group. Morgan (Annala) played extremely well both offensively and defensively including a couple of really good energy turning digs."

Head Coach Bear Grassl:  "I'm really excited about how we battled with a tough Biola team. We had opportunities to win versus a good team and I know we will grow from these experiences."

Sonoma State 3, Notre Dame de Namur 0

BELMONT, Calif. --
While the temperature inside and outside of the gym was hot, it was the Seawolves that were also sizzling on this night.  Sonoma State (2-1) earned its second win of the season by dismantling the tournament host Notre Dame de Namur (1-2) who just came off of a five game loss to CCAA member San Francisco State University earlier in the day. The Seawolves won by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-11 in a match that lasted a mere one hour and six minutes.

The Seawolves had four players who recorded double digit kills. Sophomore outside Caiti Wiesner led the team with fourteen kills, while freshman opposite Amy Trephan had her best match this season recording thirteen kills en route to a .308 average.  Senior outside Calan Seitz also added thirteen kills on only two errors for a .458 average.  Offensively the Argonauts were led by outside hitter and First Team Pacific West Conference player Bianca Alvarez who finished the evening with ten kills.

The offense was a well oiled machine led by senior setter Courtney Seda who amassed 46 attempts.  Offensively the Seawolves hit for .396 on the evening, while limiting the Argonauts to .130 hitting percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Caiti Wiesner:  "Collectively we played very clean and we really meshed. We did some switching of the lineup which helped us be more effective as a team. We had really good serve receive and our offense ran effectively because of it. We look forward to our next match in front of our home fans."

The Seawolves start up again Saturday with a match versus down the road non-conference rival Dominican University at 2:00 pm followed by the night cap against Holy Names University at 7:00 pm.
