HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team led two-time defending CCAA champion Cal State East Bay for 30 of the 40 minutes Tuesday night, but the host Pioneers went on a 20-7 run over the final eight minutes to steal the win over the visiting Seawolves at Pioneer Gym in Hayward. Sonoma falls to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA while Cal State East Bay rises to 9-6 (5-4 CCAA).
The Seawolves raced out to a couple of eight-point leads midway through the first half, but like the fourth quarter, the Pioneers went on a run in the final eight minutes of the second period, a 17-9 margin, to even the score at 29-29 heading into the intermission.
Ugochi Anudokem netted the first score out of the halftime break, but CSUEB's Elayshia Woolridge nailed a three-pointer 18 seconds later to give the Pioneers just their second lead of the ballgame, a one-point advantage at 32-31 at the 8:59 mark of the third quarter. Burroughs scored the game's next five points to allow SSU to regain its lead.
The Seawolves would stay ahead of the Pioneers until the six-minute mark of the fourth quarter when CSUEB was enjoying a 12-0 run to put them ahead by six (50-44) with four minutes to play in regulation. Sonoma got to within a point on a pair of occasions late, the last being at the 1:15 mark, but the Pioneers sealed the win at the free throw line down the stretch.
Defensively, SSU held the hosts to 36.7 percent from the floor (18-49), below their season average of 40.2 percent entering the contest, while the Seawolves connected on 31.7 percent (19-60). Sonoma also outrebounded (41-34) and forced more turnovers (19-15), 12 of which were via the steal.
Burroughs led all players with 15 points while Anudokem chipped in with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Sonoma State returns to action Friday night at home in The Wolves' Den, hosting Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 pm.
