Rohnert Park -- Seawolves put on a show Thursday night, taking No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles to a fifth set in the CCAA 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 35-17, 15-11) match against the Golden Eagles.
Sonoma State now sits 8-12 overall and 4-7 in conference.
SET BY SET: Seawolves gained a 7-4 (three errors by the Cal State LA and a kill by Amy Treohan) lead over the Golden Eagles, before stringing together six points (four kills) for a 14-6. Sonoma held onto its lead, beating Cal State LA 25-18 in set one.
Sonoma kept its energy going into the opening points of set two, taking an early 5-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. SSU took its final lead 21-20 before the Golden Eagles claimed five of the final seven points to win set two.
Seawolves regained momentum, set three was a back and forth battle with nine ties and eight lead changes. SSU had 14 kills and a .243 attack percentage in the set, led by
Tate Battistini with four kills, while the Wildcats forced seven CSULA attack errors.
The fourth set saw the Golden Eagles take a 14-7 lead over the Seawolves, and rally from an early deficit to force a fifth set with a 25-17 win. SSU notched three points to make it 17-12 before CSULA scored eight of the match's final 13 points.
Sonoma jumped out to an early 9-7 lead in the fifth set. CSULA rallied to even the score at 9-9, but three straight points from the Golden Eagles gave CSULA a 14-10 cushion. Cal State LA closed the set with four of the final five points to give the Golden Eagle a 15-11 win.
AGAINST CAL STATE LA: The all-time series moves to 38-15 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
