Amyx Sends Seawolves to Semis With Golden Goal

BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In a season full of shutouts and single-goal margins of victory, it was Bella Amyx who advanced Sonoma State to the semi-finals of the 2018 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament with a golden goal in the 100th minute of Tuesday afternoon's match, her seventh career game winner.

"It feels really good," Amyx sighed with a smile. "I took a lot of shots today and I missed a similar one right before and it was kind of already killing me. I was like, 'wow, we're going to go into double-overtime and PKs,' so to put that away, and the way the goal was, felt really good."

With the clock ticking down into the final minute of the first overtime period, Julia Pritchard drove the ball down the right line, inside the box with defenders putting pressure on the freshman forward. Her run drew out Golden Eagles' keeper Adriana Maldonado to the near-side post, leaving Amyx unmarked as she crashed through the middle of the box and toward the net. Pritchard's ball, sent to the center of the six-yard box, found Amyx, who back-heeled the ball with her outside foot and shot her arms up in elation as she watched the ball roll in.

The win marks the Seawolves' 11th of the season and their ninth shutout of 2018.

When asked about the defensive presence of her team and their importance in keeping the Seawolves in games like this, Amyx credited her back line and goalkeeper with creating trust.

"Krissy [Keller], Dayna [Dolcini], Sam [Layman] Kami [Haiber], all those players that go back there, we have a lot of trust in them. And when you have those players that give you results, people just go. I can leave my back line without worrying. I know they take care of bushiness back there. It's really good. I love it."

Sonoma State kept Cal State LA on the back heel for most of the match, firing of a barrage of 33 attempts (19 on goal) to the Golden Eagles' 10 (seven on goal), before nabbing the game-winner. Despite the disparate shot totals, LA remained a presence through the majority of the game, consistently putting pressure on Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles' best opportunity of the match came in the 29th minute of play as an illegal passback was called on a Seawolves defender, setting up an indirect free kick inside the penalty area.

All but one Seawolf set up on the touch line with keeper Kristen Spear to prepare for the attempt on goal and minimize the target space for Tatiana Zuvic, whose shot eventually proved blocked.

The tide eventually turned in favor of the home team as 16 seconds into overtime, Irma Pinzon earned her second yellow card of the match for taking down Alexis Espitia at midfield and was shown off by the referee.

Down a player, Los Angeles was denied any shots in the overtime period while being forced to defend repeated attempts by Sonoma State.

The exciting victory now sends the Seawolves on to the CCAA Tournament semi-finals at UC San Diego, where they will face off against No. 2 seed Chico State.

"Chico is a very good team, they're on a roll and they're finding ways to win. That presents itself for a wonderful game," said Seawolves' head coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn of her team's upcoming match. "It's pretty fun as a coaching staff because it's real analytical where you're trying to come up with a strategy to win the game, but it's great for the younger players too because they've seen this opponent and they kind of already know what they're going to see."

The Wildcats—who handed Sonoma State their second of only three season losses back on October 12 with a 87th-minute game winner—have taken off as of late, claiming three points in nine of their last 11 matches. One of which was a 1-0 shutout of the conference's best team, UC San Diego.

"The way we went down to Chico, it's something we haven't forgotten, and we know that on a good day we can take that game as well," Amyx affirmed. "I think we're ready and personally, I just want to get on the field and start playing."

The Seawolves and Wildcats will face off Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Triton Stadium in La Jolla. For more information regarding the 2018 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, click here.
