VB: Seawolves Pick up Conference win at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball travelled up to Humboldt State on Wednesday and came away with a 3-1 victory.  The Seawolves earned the CCAA win with a potent attack, racking up 51 kills and moved to 5-3 in conference play.

SSU came out strong, using a match high 14 first set kills to take the early lead.  Humboldt won four of the first five points but the Seawolves took over the set with a 10-2 run.  Jenn Trephan recorded two aces during the run with Leilani Hallman adding two kills.  Trephan would go on to add two more kills towards the end of the set to put it away 25-20.

The second set was tight throughout until the Seawolves used 7-3 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.  SSU jumped out early but found themselves trailing 11-10 after a response from the Jacks.  The Seawolves retook the lead but the game eventually moved to an 18-18 tie.  From there it was all Sonoma State with Hallman notching three kills and Emily Eaton adding another.

Humboldt State forced a fourth set with a 25-18 win in the third behind a 13-kill performance.  The Seawolves looked to put the match away fourth and jumped out to a 7-2 lead and eventually went on to lead 15-8.  Six different Sonoma State players tallied kills during that run but the Jacks would not go down quietly.  Humboldt came all the way back to take a 21-20 advantage and looked to force a fifth game.  However, Amy and Jenn Trephan swung the set back to SSU with back-to-back kills and Riley Beyma added another to finish the match off at 25-23.

The Seawolves held a 51-43 kill advantage and hit .216 for the match.  Eaton led the team with 14 kills while Amy Trephan and Hallman tacked on 10 apiece.  Jenn Trephan assists on 26 kills and also finished with six kills, three aces and a pair of blocks.  Beyma added 22 digs to lead Sonoma State.

These two teams square off again on Saturday evening with a home match for the Seawolves at 5:00 pm.  The match will also be the Dig Pink Night.
