ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team picked up a huge CCAA victory on Thursday evening, taking down No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona 3-1. The Seawolves moved to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in conference play with their third straight win.
SSU came out strong, leading early before the Broncos closed the gap to 12-11 in the opening set. The Seawolves would then score the next five points thanks to a pair of kills from
Kiana Richardson, an ace from
Brynna Slayton and a kill from
Jen Trephan. They would eventually push the lead to as many as nine with
Kaden Young ending the first set with an ace for a 25-16 win.
Jaden Krist finished the first with five kills while Richardson tacked on four.
The second set was back-and-forth with several lead changes before the Seawolves found themselves down 22-20. Richardson would then recorded a huge kill and Young picked up another ace to even the set at 22-22. After another point by the Broncos,
Leilani Hallman even the score again with a kill and Trephan notched one of her own to give SSU match point. Slayton then ended the set with another ace as the Seawolves pulled ahead 2-0.
Cal Poly Pomona regrouped in the third, breaking a 14-14 tie with a six-point run and eventually cut the deficit in half with a 25-18 victory. The Seawolves turned it back on in the fourth set, putting the Broncos away with another late run. Sonoma State led most of the way, including a 20-17 advantage before CPP scored three straight to tie the set. After a service error by the Broncos and an attacking error, Richardson notched a kill to make it 23-20. Trephan made it match point two points later with a kill and the Seawolves sealed the win on a block by Richardson and Hallman.
SSU finished with a 60-44 kill advantage and topped 11 kills in all four sets. The Seawolves finished with 18 kills in the first and 16 in the fourth, the two highest totals in the match. Richardson finished with a career high 19 kills while Krist added 13 and 11 digs. Trephan had a fantastic all-around match with eight kills, 28 assists, 20 digs and five blocks. Slayton led all players with five aces and Hallaman tacked on ten kills and three blocks.
The Seawolves host another ranked opponent on Saturday when they take on Cal State San Bernardino at 2:00 pm. Saturday will also be Senior Day as Sonoma State will honor graduating seniors
