BOX SCORE 4 TURLOCK, Calif. – The Sonoma State softball team continued their scorching play, taking three of four on the first two days of the Tournament of Champions. The Seawolves avenged an opening game defeat by taking down the #1 team in the country on Friday evening and followed that with a sweep on Saturday. SSU improved to 25-14 on the season with the wins and are 14-2 in their last 16 games.
The TOC started on Friday with the Seawolves falling to Saint Martins 6-1 in a tough opener. The Saints took an early lead with two runs in the first and extended the margin to 4-0 in the second. Trailing 5-0, SSU got one back in the fifth on a single by

Skylar Linnane doubled earlier in the inning to give the Seawolves a scoring opportunity. SMU added another run later in the game to make it a 6-1 final.
In the night cap Sonoma State regrouped and pulled off a 5-2 victory over No. 1 ranked Concordia Irvine. The Seawolves handed the Eagles just their second loss of the season with a commanding performance on the rubber by
Camille Rodriguez. Rodriguez, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week took an 18-inning scoreless and five game winning streak into the game. She was dominant once again, allowing just one earned run in a complete game performance.
Offensively, SSU got on the board in the second inning and never looked back.
Giana Hays walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. She later scored on an infield single by
Cassidy Romano. In the top of the third the Seawolves extended the lead when
Jordyn Martinez belted a two-run homerun to right center to make it 3-0. The Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the frame but Rodriguez got the final two outs to end the threat.
The game moved into the seventh still at 3-1 when the Seawolves added a pair of insurance runs to their total.
Rylee Nishimoto led off with a bunt single and Martinez followed with a double down the line. Hays then dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Nishimoto to make it 4-1.
Courtney Jack was then hit by a pitch and replaced by pinch runner
Amari Houston. Houston and Martinez promptly pulled off a double steal to add SSU's final run. Concordia scored one run in the bottom of the frame but Rodriguez ended the contest with a strikeout to seal the win.
Sonoma State took the momentum into Saturday's contests and opened the day with a 4-2 win over Western Washington. The Seawolves jumped out early once again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and rode a stellar pitching performance from
Bailee Reed.
Anna Zoia-Buescher led off with a single and stole record. Nishimoto then reached on an error and stole second herself to put two runners in scoring position. Hays would draw a walk to load the bases and Romano would follow with the big hit, doubling to left center to score two runs.
Reed meanwhile retired the first seven batters she faced before the Vikings got one off of her in the third inning to cut the lead down to 2-1. The Seawolves got the run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Jack to score Romano who singled and stole a base to get into scoring position. WWU delivered back-to-back doubles in the fourth to pull back within one but once again Sonoma responded right away to get the run back. In the bottom of the fourth Zoia-Buescher doubled and later scored on a double by Martinez to make it 4-2.
Reed did the rest from there, retiring nine of the final ten batters she faced and picking up her third win of the season. She struck out five and allowed just five hits. Romano and Martinez led the team with two hits apiece and combined for three of the four RBIs.
The Seawolves wrapped up Saturday with an 8-0 victory over Hawaii Hilo in the nightcap. Sonoma scored eight runs over the final two innings and used a two-hit complete game shutout by Jesse Dupuis win their 25
th game of the season. Dupuis was phenomenal on the night, allowing just a single in the first and fourth innings on her way to her 10
th win.
Dupuis and the Hilo starter both cruised through the first five innings, sending the game to sixth in a scoreless tie. SSU got going in the sixth with three runs to break the game open. Hunt started the inning by reaching on an error and Zoia-Buescher followed with a single. Two batters later Martinez delivered once again, breaking the scoreless tie with a two-run single. She would also score in the inning on an error to make it 3-0.
The Seawolves were no where close to finished, tacking on five more runs in the seventh to up their lead to eight runs.
Gabby Hensley and Zoia-Buescher both singled and scored on a two-run double by
Lauren Mirtoni. Later in the inning, SSU added four straight singles to score three more runs. Hays, Romano, Jack and
Sierra Moffett all delivered the consecutive hits.
Dupuis did the rest, retiring the final 12 batters she faced in order to close the door on the Vulcans. She did not walk a batter and struck out five. Eight different Seawolves picked up hits in the game with Hays leading all players with three. Zoia-Buescher tacked on two while Mirtoni and Martinez drove in two apiece.
The Seawolves close out the Tournament of Champions on Sunday morning with a 10:00 am game against Western Oregon.
