Sonoma State Softball Heads to Hayward for NCAA West Regionals

HAYWARD, CALIF.- Sonoma State Softball is coming off a solid CCAA Conference Tournament showing where they upset the top seeded East Bay Pioneers and appeared in the semi-finals. Now, after punching their ticket to the NCAA Regional Tournament, the Seawolves will look to keep their postseason hopes alive starting tomorrow against a familiar foe!

The Seawolves will open the first round of the tournament with a showdown against conference and local rivals the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay. For the year the Seawolves have managed a 2-3 record against East Bay. While the Pioneers won the first regular season series, Sonoma secured the more critical matchup ousting East Bay from the CCAA Tournament thanks to a 6-3 victory. In that game the Seawolves managed eight hits highlighted by a clutch three run homerun by all-conference catcher Jasmine Moreno. The Seawolves also stole a pair of bases and earned five walks as well. Inside the circle, the all-conference caliber duo of Ava Paquin and Charlie Johnson were dominant. The pair relinquished just three hits, struck out five and did not give up an earned run.

The rivals will meet again this Thursday with the winner advancing to the second round of play on Friday. The loser will have another opportunity to advance playing in an elimination game on Friday at 12:30 PM.

The two other opponents that will reside in the bracket will be Concordia University Irvine and Western Washington. Sonoma did not face Concordia this season but did play a double-header against the Vikings of Western Washington in which the Seawolves split the games winning the second matchup 4-0 on their home field.

Regardless, Sonoma is primed to do some damage in the Western Regional bracket given their outstanding combination of veteran players, impact freshman and a championship caliber coach at the helm in Jennifer Bridges!
