SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Senior forwards
Nathan Medina and
Andrew Bailey each scored to lead 13th-ranked Sonoma State to their fifth straight victory, a 2-1 defeat of San Francisco State at Cox Stadium in San Francisco. The Seawolves improve to 15-2-2, 9-1-2 CCAA while the Gators fall to 8-9-2, 5-8-1 CCAA.
Medina picked up the first goal of the game in the 13th minute when he scored off an assist from
Eric Lafon. It was Medina's seventh goal of the season and the fifth goal he's scored in his career at Cox Stadium.
The 1-0 lead was soon doubled to 2-0 when
Andrew Bailey scored his eighth goal of the season off an assist from freshman
Cam Vickers in the 24th minute. For Vickers, it was his league-high 10th assist of the season.
The Gators would slice the lead in half just over a minute later when Spencer Schwandt converted a penalty kick.
The final 65 minutes of the game would go scoreless, though Sonoma had several solid opportunities. The Seawolves out shot the Gators 18-8 in the game.
Said head coach
Marcus Ziemer, "It is always tough to play at SF State. Our goal today was just to get a win. The field was in rough shape, so it was hard to pass it around."
Though their contributions don't necessarily show up in the box score, Coach Ziemer was quick to complement a pair of freshmen,
Davide Furtado and
Cory Taufer for their strong play in the game.
The Seawolves will host Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Sunday) next weekend at Seawolf Field.
