Jaci Davey had a goal and an assist on Sunday to help lead Sonoma State to a 2-0 win over rival Chico State at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. The win pushes the Seawolves into a first place tie atop the CCAA North Division standings with San Francisco State. The Seawolves will enter next week's CCAA Tournament in La Jolla with a record of 15-4-1, 10-3-1 CCAA. The Wildcats see their season conclude at 7-10-3, 3-8-3 CCAA.
The Seawolves have reached 15 wins in a season for the first time since 1999, when they went 15-2-4.
Said head coach Luke Oberkirch, "I'm proud of the team. They've been consistent all season and to go into the tournament with momentum like this is fantastic."
Davey picked up the first goal of the game in the 37th minute when she gathered the ball, juked, and beat the Chico State keeper from several yards out. It would be her sixth goal of the season and it would hold up until there were under three minutes to go when Davey fed
Tracy Webster on a breakaway to set the final margin at 2-0. Webster scored a goal for the seventh time this year.
The Seawolves held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first half, but they trailed 4-2 in shots in the second half. SSU employed a bend, but don't break defense that was effective in keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
Courtney Grixti earned her fifth shutout of the season with a four-save performance.
Prior to the game, the Seawolves honored four student-athletes playing in their final home game:
Kayce Brawley,
Maddy Drake,
Brittany Peterson, and
Brooke Peterson.
Pairings and game times for the CCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday. Stay tuned to sonomaseawolves.com for all the details.
