CHICO, Calif- Sonoma State battled back from 15 points down in the second half and had five chances to tie the game or take the lead, but each opportunity came up empty as the Seawolves fell to No. 18 Seattle PacifIc 60-56. The loss is the third straight for the Seawolves as they drop to 3-3 on the season. The Falcons improve to 4-1.
Seattle Pacific led 51-36 with 13:20 remaining and 54-41 with 8:40 left, but Sonoma used a 15-4 run to trim the lead to 58-56 with 3:10 to play. Unfortunately, the Seawolves would not score again as they next five possessions resulted in a missed jumper, a missed layup, a missed three-pointer, another missed layup, and finally another missed three-pointer. SPU kept the Seawolves in the running by committing four turnovers, but they finally put the game away when Kelsey Burns sank two free throws with ten seconds left.
Burns and Maddie Maloney each finished with 14 points. The Falcons were 8-of-16 on three-pointers, despite being out-rebounded 36-29 by the Seawolves and committing 20 turnovers.
The Seawolves got 12 points and five rebounds from
Lauren Redfield.
Stephanie Barnes pitched in with nine points and
Aly Conway turned in a career-high eight points in the defeat.
Sonoma shot 37.9% from the field in the game, but they were just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from three-point land and 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the free throw line.
The Seawolves will look to snap their skid on Saturday when they take on another tough GNAC opponent, Western Washington.
