ARCATA, Calif- Humboldt State used a 19-3 run midway through the second half to pull away from Sonoma State on Wednesday night in a 71-58 victory in the CCAA opener for both teams. The Seawolves see defeat for the first time this season as they go to 3-1, 0-1 CCAA. The Lumberjacks improve to 5-2, 1-0 CCAA.
The Seawolves were overwhelmed by the 'Jacks early, falling behind 21-6 in the first eight minutes. From that point, the Seawolves turned in a 20-7 run of their own to pull within two at 28-26. They would trail by just five at the break (33-28).
The margin was still just five with 12 minutes left before the 'Jacks would start on another big run. Over the next six minutes, Humboldt would outscore Sonoma 18-3 to effectively put the game away.
No Sonoma State player was in double figures as the Seawolves got nine off the bench from
Olivia Larkin and
Katie Keilig.
Michelle Gardner, in her first start of the year, pulled down six rebounds and
Lauren Redfield had three assists.
The Lumberjacks had two players turn in double-doubles in Brittney Taylor (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Katie Franci (13 points, 10 rebounds).
The Seawolves will be back at it on Saturday at UC San Diego.
