CHICO, Calif- The second-ranked Sonoma State baseball team opened up their series with No. 16 Chico State on Friday with a 13-2 victory to extend their winning streak to 22 games in a row, tying a school record. The Seawolves improve to 28-1 overall and remain perfect in CCAA play at 15-0. The Wildcats fall to 21-8, 10-6 CCAA.
The Seawolves handed the Wildcats their worst home defeat since 1994. In the process they tied the school record with their 22nd consecutive win, a streak dating back to February 16th. In 2007, the Seawolves won 22 consecutive games on their way to a 50-12 overall record.
After
Dave Herman led off the game with a home run, the Seawolves were able to take advantage of a crucial Wildcat error to build a 3-0 first inning lead. Two more Chico errors in the third led to three more Seawolf runs and, in turn, a 6-0 lead after three. Freshman
Kyle Jones had the key hit in the inning when he laced a two-run single up the middle.
A six-run lead was more than enough cushion for ace
Matt Means, who struck out five and scattered six hits through five innings of work. Means improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.
Kris Haycock led the Seawolves with four hits.
Cameron Cook was 3-for-5 while SSU's five-through-eight hitters-
Mark Pestorich,
Ian Bridges, Jones, and
Konrad Thieme- each had two RBIs.
Shane Farmer had three hits to pace the Wildcats.
The Seawolves and Wildcats will meet again on Saturday in Chico before coming to Rohnert Park for a doubleheader on Sunday.
