ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State's 23-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon as rival Chico State swept the Seawolves in a doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond. The 16th-ranked Wildcats won by scores of 5-2 and 5-4 to salvage a series split. The second-ranked Seawolves fall to 29-3, 16-2 CCAA with the loss.
It was the first loss in over six weeks for Sonoma State and the first home defeat since a 16-14 loss to Chico State on May 5, 2007.
The Seawolves managed just one extra base hit in the doubleheader, a two-run double off the bat of
Travis Babin.
The Wildcats owe their game one win to some clutch hitting, a little wind, and a gutsy, 172-pitch outing by Mike Robbins. Robbins went the distance for Chico, striking out eight and allowing nine hits to earn his sixth win of the year.
Chico State's Joey Burke led off the game with a homer to right, but the Sewaolves quickly countered with two in the bottom of the second on a
Travis Babin two-run double. The Wildcats got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings with two outs, then worked the bases loaded with a pair down in the eighth inning. Nick Dingman, was then hit with a pitch, resulting in another two-out run for the Wildcats.
A day removed from a four-run ninth inning, the Seawolves nearly pulled the trick again. With two outs,
Dave Herman reached on a fielder's choice befor
Nick Nosti singled and
Kris Haycock walked to load the bases.
Tyrese McDaniel followed with what looked like a sure grand slam to right, but much to the Seawolves' chagrin, the ball died at the warning track and with it, so did SSU's winning streak.
Gary Moran was charged with the loss after giving up four earned runs in six innings of work.
In game two, the Seawolves overcame a one-run deficit in the third inning with three runs on back-to-back-to-back run scoring at bats from Nosti, Haycock, and McDaniel. The Wildcats were quick to answer, scoring four times in the top of the fourth, thanks to a walk, two hit batsmen, and a pair of singles.
SSU would score once in the fifth on a McDaniel RBI single to draw within one, but that's as close as it would get as Andrew Pluta tossed a solid, seven-inning complete game.
Kevin Asselin was tagged with the loss for SSU as he falls to 4-1 on the year.
The Seawolves hit the road next weekend to take on last year's West Region champion, Cal State L.A..
