CHICO, Calif- The Sonoma State softball team was swept in a CCAA doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Chico State by scores of 6-3 and 3-2. The second game went to extra innings before the Wildcats picked up the game-winning run. With the defeats, the Seawolves fall to 15-27, 3-19 CCAA. Chico improves to 23-22, 11-13 CCAA.
The Wildcats jumped on Sonoma starter
Kayla Ledford for four runs in the first inning of game one. Chico got five hits and a walk in the big inning. The lead was pushed to 6-0 in the third before SSU struck for three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. An RBI single by Nikki Freiberg and a two-run single by
Jesse Talaugon were used to cut the Chico advantage in half.
That's as close as SSU would get, however, as Chico's Laura Stokes closed the door with three shutout innings. Freiberg led the SSU bats with a pair of hits in the game.
In game two, the Seawolves pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the first three innings on run producing singles from
Brittany Simao and
Brittany Williams. Chico tied things up in the fifth and neither team was able to score over the next three innings. In the ninth, Chico moved quickly as Laura Smith singled to lead off the inning before coming around to score the clincher on an RBI double from Nickie Jarrett.
Freiberg again led the Seawolves with two hits. SSU used a trio of pitchers (
Calli Herzog,
Kayla Ledford, and
Brittany Williams) with Williams being tagged with the loss.
SSU is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Belmont to take on Notre Dame de Namur.
