TURLOCK, Calif- One day after sweeping Cal State Stanislaus, the Sonoma State baseball team was handed a doubleheader sweep of their own at Warrior Field on Sunday. The Warriors won by scores of 11-4 and 3-0 to even the four-game series and solidify their standing in regards to the CCAA Tournament. The Seawolves, ranked No. 6 in the nation, fall to 39-9, 23-7 CCAA. The Warriors improve to 33-18, 21-11 CCAA.
After winning their first six series of the year and eight of their first nine, the Seawolves have split two series in a row. SSU still has not lost a series this season.
The Seawolves trailed 4-3 heading into the seventh inning of game one before the Warriors exploded for seven runs to take an 11-3 lead. Stanislaus used seven hits and a Seawolf error to fuel the big inning.
Kevin Asselin (7-2) was charged with the loss in game one. He gave up four runs in five and two-thirds while striking out eight.
Ian Bridges, the CCAA's leading hitter, continued his fine season with three hits. The Warriors pounded out 17 hits in the game, led by three a piece from Dennis Wolfe, Jake Oketani, and Mike Bellotti.
After using a powerful offense to win game one, the Warriors used a tremendous pitching effort to win the nightcap. Marquis Fleming was simply masterful in a complete game four-hitter. Fleming struck out ten and became the first pitcher to shut out the Seawolves all season long. SSU's previous low for runs in a game was two, against Chico State.on March 30th.
The Warriors got the only run they'd end up needing in the first inning as Fleming cruised to his tenth win of the season.
The Seawolves will now entertain Chapman University, the No. 1 NCAA Division III team in the nation, on Monday at noon.
