ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A four-run eighth inning helped propel Chapman University to an 8-6 win over Sonoma State on Monday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The Panthers, ranked No. 1 in the nation among NCAA Division III teams, improves to 32-3 on the season. The Seawolves, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, fall to 39-10.
The Seawolves used the game as an opportunity to give playing time to many of the reserves and several responded favorably.
Derek Harms had two hits from the leadoff spot and both
Ryan Averkieff and
Nick DiNapoli had runs batted in.
The Panthers got out to an early 3-0 lead when Ryan Hall blasted a three-run second inning home run. The Seawolves countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third when Harms drove in a run with a single and Averkieff delivered a sacrifice fly.
Chapman's lead grew to 4-2 in the fourth inning when catcher Matt Pearson his a home run down the left field line.
The Seawolves tied things up at four in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles from DiNapoli and pinch hitter
Konrad Thieme.
In the eighth inning, the Panthers had four singles and a solo home run from Stuart Hyman to make it 8-4. SSU got two of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth when Harms drove in a run and then came around to score on an error.
Scott Wishnack was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs in 1.1 innings of work. The Seawolves used six pitchers in all. Travis Cross got the win for Chapman.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Saint Mary's College in a single game starting at 2:30 pm.
