LOS ANGELES, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team improved to 32-3 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of Cal State L.A., 15-11 and 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at Reeder Field in Los Angeles. The second-ranked Seawolves have taken the first three games of the series as they improve to 19-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles fall to 18-19, 12-10 CCAA.
The Seawolves have a record of 82-15 dating back to the beginning of the 2007 season.
Leading 3-2 heading in to the sixth inning of game one, the Seawolves crossed the plate eight times to build an 11-2 lead.
Trevor Howell had a two-run single and
Dave Herman a two-run double in the inning. Cal State L.A. nearly matched the Seawolves' output with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
SSU scored two more runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and one in the ninth to hold on for the 15-11 win. Howell finished the game 3-for-6 with five RBIs, including seventh homer of the year. Six of SSU's nine starting field players scored two runs each in the game.
Gary Moran picked up the win with eight strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings.
In game two, both the Seawolves and Golden Eagles scored two runs in the first. Tied at two, the Seawolves pulled ahead in the third when
Ian Bridges and
Konrad Thieme hit home runs. For Thieme, it was his team-high eighth home run of the season.
Kevin Asselin struck out nine batters on the way to his fifth victory of the season. Herman, Bridges, and Thieme each had two hits in the game.
Ian Bridges went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader to lift his batting average to a CCAA-high .440.
The Seawolves, winners of three in a row and 26 of their last 28, will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon. The game will be available via a webcast (waldcast.net).
