LOS ANGELES, Calif- Sonoma State could not complete the four-game series sweep on Sunday as Cal State L.A. scored a run with two outs in the tenth inning for an 8-7 win. The second-ranked Seawolves fall to 32-4, 19-3 CCAA while the Golden Eagles see their record bump up to 19-19, 13-10 CCAA.
Two of SSU's four losses have occurred in extra inning games. Three of the four have been by just one run.
The Seawolves got off to another fine start in Sunday's game, scoring twice in the first and three times in the second to take a 5-0 lead before the Golden Eagles got on the board. Leading 6-1, the Seawolves allowed the Golden Eagles to get right back into it with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two more in the sixth inning.
Tied at six in the ninth, the Seawolves'
Dave Herman earned a walk to lead off the inning. After moving around the bases on a walk to
Kyle Jones and a single by
Gino Lavezzo, he came home on a
Nick Nosti sacrifice fly to give SSU a 7-6 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, SSU reliever
Nick O'Brien surrendered a single to Henry Contreras before a two-out single by Devon Ramirez scored Contreras' pinch-runner, Ryan Plum. The Golden Eagles got the win an inning later when Joe Park, who singled with one out, was able to score on an apparent double play ball to end the inning. Unfortunately, the 6-4-3 double play was not to be as the ball was ruled to have popped out of the glove of
Gino Lavezzo on a scoop attempt of a
David Adler throw.
The Seawolves banged out 16 more hits on Sunday afternoon to leave their team batting average at .351, an even 100 points higher than their opponent's average (.251).

O'Brien was charged with the loss after giving up one earned run, two total, in three and two-third innings.
