Comeback Comes Up Short Against Chico

CHICO, Calif-  Trailing by four entering the ninth inning, the Sonoma State baseball staged a dramatic rally, only to fall short in a 4-3 loss to Chico State.  The defeat means the Seawolves will have to take on Cal State Stanislaus later on Saturday in order to stay alive in the CCAA Tournament.

Chico State got a brilliant performance from starting pitcher Mike Robbins.  He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and had Seawolf hitters off balance all day long.  SSU finally got to Robbins in the ninth when Ian Bridges and Konrad Thieme singled to open up the inning.  An RBI fielder's choice by Trevor Howell and an RBI single from Nick Nosti pulled SSU within one and put the tying run on second base with two outs.  However, Ryan Averkieff grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Gary Moran got the start for Sonoma State and pitched pretty good, though he was tagged with a loss after allowing three earned runs in seven innings.  Moran surrendered just five hits and struck out six.
