CHICO, Calif- The Sonoma State offense came up big in the clutch on Friday, scoring nine of their runs and producing 14 of their hits with two outs, in a 10-4 win over Cal State Stanislaus at the NCAA Baseball Championship West Regional at Nettleton Stadium in Chico. The fourth-ranked Seawolves (48-13) will play next on Saturday at 11:00 am against the winner of Friday night's UC San Diego-Chico State contest.
The 29th-ranked Warriors were eliminated from the tournament and end their season at 37-23.
Sonoma State staked starter
Matt Means to two runs in the first inning when
Konrad Thieme blasted a two-run homer to left field, his 18th of the season.
The Warriors cut the lead in half with a run in the third, but another two-out rally in the fifth, highlighted by back-to-back RBI hits by Thieme and
Kyle Jones quickly built the lead to four at 5-1.
SSU put two more runs across in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a commanding lead and give Means all the cushion he would need.
Means went eight innings, allowing ten hits and just two earned runs, to pick up his ninth win of the season. Said Means, "I didn't have my best stuff, but I was able to locate the ball well today." The senior southpaw seemed to have no problem with the 100-degree heat, taking the Seawolves all the way to the ninth.
After pounding out 20 hits in Thursday's win over Nebraska-Kearney, the Seawolves picked up 17 hits against a trio of Warrior pitchers.
Nick Nosti,
Mark Pestorich, and
David Adler each had three hits.
Eric Federico picked up the loss for Stanislaus. He allowed ten runs in 6.2 innings of work. Jacob Thelen had three hits to lead the Warrior offensive attack.
