ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Denelle Baker didn't score her first point until just 2:40 remaining in the game, but her two clutch three-pointers in the waning minutes proved to be the difference on Friday night at Cal State Monterey Bay earned a come-from-behind 61-57 win over Sonoma State in CCAA action in Rohnert Park. The Otters continue their strong start, improving to 7-2, 2-1 CCAA. The Seawolves stumble to 4-6, 0-3 CCAA.
Baker's first three-pointer came at the 2:40 mark when she tied the game at 54 on a bank shot from the top of the arc. Thirty three seconds later, Baker struck again, nailing a three from the baseline as the Otters took a 57-54 lead. They would not trail the rest of the way.
The Otters had pulled even at several points in the second half, but they were unable to overtake the Seawolves until the final minutes. In fact, Sonoma led almost the entire way, pushing their lead to as many as 11 in the first half. The Seawolves would lead 29-22 at the break.
Helen Suarez paced the Otters with 18 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Janet Oseguera added 13 and Devin Riezebos posted 12 points and seven boards from the bench.
Olivia Larkin led the Seawolves with 12 points. She also added seven rebounds and four assists.
Heidi Mertle tacked on ten rebounds and freshman
Marie Sweet had a nice game with nine points in 14 minutes.
It was Cal State Monterey Bay's first win over Sonoma State in ten all-time meetings.
The Seawolves will hope to right the ship tomorrow night when they host San Francisco State.
