Seawolves Again Just Short Against 'Jacks

Steven Pratt had a dozen points to lead the Seawolves on Wednesday
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State gave Humboldt State all they could handle on Wednesday night before falling 73-69 in an exciting CCAA matchup before an enthusiastic crowd at Seawolf Gym in Rohnert Park.  Sonoma State has now lost two games to Humboldt State this season by a total of six points.  The loss drops the Seawolves to 7-11, 3-8 CCAA while the Lumberjacks improve to 15-6, 8-3 CCAA.

After a fast paced first half with several lead changes and five ties, the teams entered the break tied at 33.  In the first three and half minutes of the second, the 'Jacks quickly took control, using an 11-1 run to go up ten.  That lead would stay between five and ten for most of the half, until the Seawolves were able to close the gap to two on a pair of free throws by Mike Nelson and a jumper by Chad Chambers with 5:41 to go.

A minute and a half later, the Seawolves sliced the lead to one on a three-pointer by Casey McRoberts, making it 63-62.  Humboldt's Elliot Babcock-Krenk was quick to answer, however, draining a three at the other of the floor thirty seconds later.

Leading by two, Humboldt State's Zac Tiedeman hit a deep three to give the 'Jacks a five-point lead with 2:06 remaining.  After cutting the lead back to three with an outstanding drive and layup by Duane Wright, the Seawolves were stunned by another clutch Tiedeman shot, this one a fall away jumper at the shot clock with 1:05 left.

Down five at 71-66, the Seawolves refused to give in, coming up with a turnover, a Chambers layup and a Steven Pratt free throw to make it 71-69 with five seconds left.  Pratt's next free throw attempt was intentionally missed, but the rebound went right to Humboldt's Kevin Atkins who was fouled, then sank the free throws to end the game.

The Seawolves had five players in double digits, led by 12 from Pratt.  Chambers (11), James Sandoval (11), Wright (11), and Nelson (10) helped spread out the scoring.  Pratt and Wright also had seven rebounds for the Seawolves.

The Lumberjacks got 22 points from Sonoma County native Zac Tiedeman.  The senior was 5-of-9 from the field with three three-pointers and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.  Kevin Atkins posted 14 points and Jameson Figgatt came up big in the middle with 14 rebounds.

The Seawolves will now turn their sights to a Friday matchup with UC San Diego.
