Men's Soccer Shutout By Warriors On Sunday

Stuart Gallant took three shots for Sonoma State on Sunday.
TURLOCK, Calif- Sonoma State managed only eight shots while Cal State Stanislaus' Artemio Arteaga and Victor Regalado combined for 14 of the Warriors 25 attempts and worked together to score the only goal by both teams in the 83rd minute, as the Seawolves fell 1-0 to the Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.

Sonoma State, who clinched the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division title with the win on Friday at Chico State, securing a spot in the conference tournament on Nov. 6-8 at Turlock, dropped to 13-2-2 overall and 10-3-1 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 10-6-1 (7-6-1 CCAA).

Seawolf goalkeeper Brook Johnson was undoubtedly the busiest player on the field on Sunday, facing a season-high 25 shot attempts but only eight on goal. However, it took the Warriors 24 shots before one could find the net. At 82:06, Cal State Stanislaus' Hector Angeles headed a shot that glanced off Regalado and eventually found the head of Arteaga who pushed it through the Sonoma State defense and into the net for the game winner.

Sonoma State couldn't find much offense anywhere besides the team-high three shots from senior Stuart Gallant and two from junior Ben Langwith -- the Seawolves were outshot 12-2 in the first half and 13-6 in the second. Warrior goalkeeper Javier Rosales made two saves; one on a shot by junior Brandon Dela Cruz just before halftime and another by Langwith midway through the second half.

It was the second time this season the Seawolves were held without dougle-digit shots, the other being at Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 20 when Sonoma State only attempted six shots but defeated the Coyotes 1-0. The loss also marks the first time this season the Seawolves were on the losing end of games decided by only one goal and are now 8-1-0 in that category.

The Seawolves will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a pair of games against Humboldt State on Friday at Arcata then back home on Sunday for Senior Day. Five seniors -- Johnson, Gallant, Casey Dayton, Jeff Loesche and Alan Grady -- will play in their final collegiate regular season home match for the Seawolves and will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Box Score: Cal State Stanislaus 1, #8 Sonoma State 0
