ARCATA, Calif- The post-season hopes of the Sonoma State women's soccer team vanished on Friday night as the Seawolves dropped a 3-1 decision to Humboldt State in Arcata. The defeat drops the Seawolves to 7-9-3, 5-7-3 CCAA. The 'Jacks bump up to 8-8-3, 5-7-3 CCAA.
The Seawolves entered the match needing a win to stay alive in the hunt for a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament after Chico State and San Francisco State had played to a tie earlier in the day.
Unfortunately, the Seawolves' must-win game got out to a rough start as the Lumberjacks got on the board less than three minutes in. Carly Kolpin was credited with her third goal of the season when she headed in a pass from Karen Pontoni.
Neither team could muster much offense for the remainder of the half and they hit the break with Humboldt up 1-0.
The Lumberjacks would add an insurance goal in the 54th minute when Gracie Gartrell scored on an assist from Kolpin.
Trailing 2-0 and in desperation mode, the Seawolves finally broke through in the 84th minute, cutting the lead in half when
Kiley Brown netted her first goal of the season off a
Tracy Webster assist.
Needing just one goal to tie the game up, the Seawolves had a quick let down, though, conceding a goal to the Lumberjacks' Katie Forba just 66 seconds later, sealing the deal.
Held to just three shots in the first 76 minutes of play, the Seawolves peppered the 'Jack defense with five shots in the final 14 to actually lead the game, eight to seven overall.
The Seawolves and Lumberjacks will conclude their 2009 season on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm and the match will be preceded by the men's game. Sunday will also be Senior Day and both of Sonoma's seniors- Webster and
Lindsay Catton- will be honored prior to the game.
