Patrick Scott scored a team-high 19 points, including 11 at the free throw line, but Concordia-Irvine had five players score in double-figures to defeat Sonoma State 89-62 on Saturday night in the final game of the 2009 Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves fell to 0-2 to start the season and the Eagles remain undefeated at 6-0.
The Eagles came shooting out of the gate and sported a 14-2 lead just 4:34 into the game. A layup and a free throw by Scott would cut the Concordia lead to nine but a seven point run gave the Eagles a 21-5 lead with 12:04 remaining in the opening half. The Seawolves would get to within ten points one more time -- 24-16 after a layup by senior
Chad Chambers but Concordia would pull away for the 40-22 lead at halftime.
The Eagles scored 19 of their 40 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes while shooting red hot from the field (14-of-30).
Concordia-Irvine, a NAIA Division I member, held off the Seawolves for the remainder of a game, and even led by 31 points at one time, giving the Eagles the lopsided 89-62 victory.
Justin Johnson led CUI with 19 points and Ben Smith added 16 for the team who hit more than half of their shots (30-59 for 50.8 percent).
Chambers grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Sonoma State.
Sonoma State will return to action next weekend at Chico to take on Seattle Pacific on Friday and Lewis & Clark on Saturday. Both games are set for 5:30 p.m.
