SEASIDE, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball set a school record for margin of victory on Friday with a 32-7 pounding of Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Baseball Field in Seaside. The 32 runs tie a school record as the Seawolves stay perfect on the year at 7-0. The Otters fall to 2-7.
The game started out inauspiciously enough with Sonoma State coming up empty in the first before scoring twice in the second. A four-run third inning was partially answered by the Otters to make it 6-2 after three. After six innings, the score was 12-3, a big lead, sure, but nothing historic.
The onslaught began in the seven when Sonoma pushed across five runs to make it 17-3. After the Otters tacked on two runs, the Seawolves plated nine runners in the top of the eighth, pushing the lead to 26-5. A six-run ninth inning put the finishing touches on the win.
The Seawolves had 28 hits in all, including ten doubles, a triple, and three home runs. Three Seawolves finished with three hits and
Cameron Cook delivered five runs batted in.
As hot as the starting lineup was, the bench was even more prolific, going 17-for-28 (.607) in the game.
Jonathan Lewis went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run,
Joe Slater had two doubles, and
Brian Wright scored four runs after knocking a triple and a home run.
The Seawolves were aided by 16 walks from Otter pitchers, though CSUMB committed just two errors.
For Sonoma State,
Keith Thompson was handed the win after striking out five in four innings of work. Six other pitchers combined in the effort.
