CARSON, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team tasted defeat for the first time in 2009 on Friday as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept a doubleheader by scores of 4-2 and 6-5 (in ten innings). The Seawolves drop to 7-2, 0-2 CCAA while the Toros improve to 6-4, 2-0 CCAA.
The Seawolves were pretty much helpless in game one against the strong pitching of the Toros' Bret Montgomery. Montgomery sat down seven batters via strikeout in his six-inning performance.
Max Kirk and
Kris Haycock each had two hits to lead the Seawolves' seven-hit attack.
Gary Moran was charged with his first loss of the season after yielding three runs in 5 2/3 innings of action.
In game two, the Seawolves trailed 5-1 heading into the eighth inning before finally showing some life at the plate. After two runs scored,
Thomas Pope plated a pair on a two-run single to tie the game at five. In the tenth inning, however, Jon Alia of CSUDH brought home the winning run on a single to complete the Toro sweep.
Pope and
Ian Bridges were each 2-for-4 in the game two defeat.
Brian Flint got the loss as the third of three Seawolf pitchers.
Casey Slate was the starter and Kenny Cook struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with another doubleheader.
