Women's Hoops Hangs Tough, But Falls At Pomona

Stephanie Barnes raced to 17 points in the first half on Friday
POMONA, Calif-  Despite career nights from Stephanie Barnes and Jaclyn Bisordi, the Sonoma State women's basketball team fell on Friday night, 62-56 to playoff bound Cal Poly Pomona.  The loss is the seventh in the last eight games for the Seawolves as they fall to 9-15, 5-12 CCAA.

The Seawolves got out of the gate quick, racing to an early 11-2 lead on the Broncos before an 11-1 lead of their own gave Pomona their first lead with about seven minutes to go in the first.  Sonoma would charge back and enter the break up five at 32-27.

Four times in the second half, Cal Poly Pomona earned a lead, only to see the resilient Seawolves answer them and take it back.  Trailing 55-54 with 3:15 remaining, Pomona's Reyana Colson hit the first of two big layups to give the Broncos the lead.  Another layup at the 1:45 mark, made it a three point game at 58-55.

The Seawolves had a chance to draw even, but a missed three-pointer by Jennifer Russo was answered by a Stephisha Walton jumper on the other end and the Seawolves never recovered.

Stephanie Barnes collected a career-high 19 points, 17 of them coming in the first half.  Bisordi came off the bench for 15 and Lauren Redfield added 11.

Walton scored a team-high 16 points for the Broncos.  Ally Smith also contributed greatly with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

With San Francisco State's loss, the Seawolves remain just a half game behind the Gators for the eighth place in the CCAA.  They will try to get back on track tomorrow night at Cal State San Bernardino.
