Seawolves Top Golden Eagles; Earn CCAA Berth

Ben Washington's 23 points on Friday night were a career-high
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State used a sparkling first half defensive performance to build a lead, then some hot shooting in the second half to hold it in a 68-60 win over Cal State L.A. in the CCAA regular season finale on Friday night at Seawolf Gym.  The victory clinches a CCAA Tournament berth for the Seawolves and a first round matchup on Tuesday with Cal State San Bernardino.  The Seawolves will enter Tuesday's matchup at 12-15, 8-12 CCAA.  The Golden Eagles see their season end at 12-15, 7-13 CCAA.

The Seawolves jumped on the Golden Eagles early, rolling to an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes.  Though the Golden Eagles would hang around for most of the first half, the Seawolves got some distance late, reeling off ten straight over the final five minutes to enter the break up 27-14.

The lead would swell to as many as 21 midway through the second half before the Golden Eagles began slowly chipping away.  Unfortunately for them, they had to far to go and too little time to do it as they would get no closer than six, in the final minute.

Ben Washington led the Seawolves with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting.  He also had four rebounds and four assists.  Gerred Link, a senior playing his final home game, also had a nice outing, tallying 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists.  The Seawolves shot 44.4% as a team in the game, including 56% in the second half.

Dwayne Jones scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Golden Eagles.  Artis Gant pitched in with 12 and Christofer Hart was the game's leader with seven assists.  The Golden Eagles shot 38.3% for the game, but that mark split two very different halves.  The shot just 17.4% in the first and 51.4% in the second.
