ROHNERT PARK- The Sonoma State softball team opened CCAA action this Friday afternoon against rival Chico State, dropping a pair of close games 2-0, and 1-0. The two losses drop the Seawolves record to 5-10 overall, and 3-7 in the CCAA. The Wildcats improve to 5-8 overall, and 3-4 in CCAA play.
Dominating pitching was theme of the doubleheader today, as both teams only managed to combine for a total of eleven hits in the two games.
In the opener, the Wildcats got a strong pitching performance from Lauren Walker, who went the distance for Chico. Walker surrendered one hit, a walk, and struck out three batters to secure the shutout for the Wildcats.
Chico took the early lead in the second, when Gwen Cox doubled off the left field wall, stole third, and was driven by a Rebecca Johnson sacrifice fly. The Wildcats went up 2-0, when Cox doubled again, advanced to third, and scored on an error by
Ashley Britton.
In the nightcap, both starters turned in solid performances, each giving up only three hits.
The Wildcats produced the only run in the game off
Lindsay Emmel in the top of the first. Christine Johnson walked to lead of the game, then advanced to second on an error. The Wildcats then called a double steal, advancing both Johnson and Jessie Minch who reached on the error. With two outs, Johnson was platted by her sister, Rebecca Johnson on a single.
Sonoma State would not threaten until the bottom of the seventh, as they collected two hits and had runners on second and third with just one out.
Kayla Ledford stepped up to the plate, attempted to bunt, and popped up into a game ending double play.
Sonoma State will look to bounce back tomorrow against Chico State. The twinbill is set for 12:00 p.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
