TURLOCK, Calif- Timely hitting and solid pitching guided the Sonoma State baseball team to a 3-1 win over No. 24 Cal State Stanislaus on Tuesday afternoon in the 2009 season opener at Warrior Field in Turlock. Senior
Gary Moran picked up the win after going five innings and allowing just one run. The Seawolves go to 1-0 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 0-1.
Moran allowed just four hits and one run while striking out five batters. The Seawolves' bullpen was just as dominant as
Casey Slate,
Cameron Ray, and
Taylor Lewis combined to allow just two hits in four innings.
The Seawolves picked up their first run in the second inning on an RBI single by senior
Mark Pestorich. Another RBI single, this one by
Leo Avila, pushed the lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth, before Warriors sliced it in half in the bottom of the frame.
Sonoma tacked on one more run in the sixth when a
Ryan Stevens RBI groundout plated
Kris Haycock.
The Seawolves pounded out ten hits as a team, three of them coming off the bat of sophomore
Cameron Cook.
The Seawolves are back in action this Friday when they host Cal State Monterey in the first game of a four-game set.
