Seawolves Sweep Otters In Saturday Twinbill

Leo Avila drove in four runs in Saturday's game one victory
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State used the long ball on Saturday afternoon to sweep Cal State Monterey Bay in a non-conference doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves hit six home runs on the day to win by scores of 7-3 and 9-0.  Sonoma State improves to 3-0 on the year.  The Otters taste their first defeat of 2009, going to 1-2 on the year.

The Otters got out to a promising start in game one, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth on a Matt DeJesus RBI double and a Cody Guarnera solo home run.  The Seawolves would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer from Ryan Stevens before the Otters tacked on another run in the fifth to make it 3-1.  That would, however, be the last run the Otters would score on the day as the Seawolves rallied.

Sonoma State took the lead with a three-run sixth inning that was highlighted by a solo homer by Ian Bridges and a two-run shot off the bat of Leo Avila.  Three more runs were added in the seventh thanks to a two-run single from Avila and an RBI double by Kris Haycock.

Alberto Rolon got the start for Sonoma, going five innings and allowing three runs.  The win was credited to Kenny Cook, who allowed just one run in three innings of relief.  Brian Flint closed the door with two scoreless innings.

Norman Hebert was quite effective in a starting role for the Otters, allowing just two runs in 5.1 innings.  The bullpen, however, was touched up for five runs in the final two and a third.

Game two was all Sonoma State with Seawolves getting out to a 2-0 start in the first inning.  Home runs would follow off the bat of Danny Pignataro, Kyle Jones, and Joey Parigi as the Seawolves ran away with the victory.  Jones and Pignataro each had two hits to lead a nine-hit Sonoma State attack.

Casey Slate pitched four brilliant innings to earn the win in the seven-inning game.  He struck out four and allowed just three hits.  Thomas Lee and Troy Brown finished off the game with a combined three shutout innings of work.

Matt DeJesus had both of the Otters' hits in game two.  Brian Callen was charged with the loss after yielding five runs in 4.1 innings of action.

The Seawolves and Otters will close out the series tomorrow with another doubleheader, starting at 11:00 am.
